Hello everyone, my name is Pat Moffett, and I am the author of this book, Lucked Out. It's about my tour with the United States Army in Vietnam in 1968 and 69. I am a Vietnam veteran. Now, why write this book after all these years? Well, traditionally we see that the media has covered the war in tragedy and grief. Lucked Out will take you on a journey through the heartwarming side, the human interest side, and even with a bunch of comedy thrown in. My message here is very clear. It's okay to smile and laugh through our tears. Here are some examples. We were stationed in this place called Ben Hoa, it's about 30 miles north of Saigon. In Saigon, there was Tung Sun Ut Air Base, and they had a pizzeria there, a New York style pizza, and we wanted to get some. Now, how do we get down there, get the pizza, and come back? I know what we'll do. We'll borrow a helicopter. Everybody borrows a helicopter to get a pizza. So off we went, got down there, got the pizza, and we're coming back, and the best laid plans sometimes go wrong, and that's what happened here. Check it out in the chapter, Saigon Pizza to Go. So there was this private Jimmy Sullivan, and he befriended an orphanage just outside our base camp in An Loc. And what he would do with this orphanage, he would bring pallets out from the camp, and he would build platform beds for the kids. He would take poncho liners and make mattresses for them. He'd bring out C-rations so they've had extra food. Even ordered food from the states from his parents. He really took this on as a great personal project of his own, and we were all supporting him. Unfortunately, it's a little bit of a bittersweet story, and you read about it in the chapter, Goodbye, Ben Hoa. Three GIs getting caught up in an international money laundering scheme? How could that be? That's pretty much what happened. We're in this bar in Saigon, and this American guy came over, construction guy, and said, you know, hey, if you guys can get me a postal money order, say for 100 bucks, I can get you thousands of piastres so you can spend it here in Saigon. We said, boy, this sounds pretty good. We can use big money like that. So we made the deal and everything, and we were partying, and an Australian sergeant came up and said, what are you partying about? And we told him about this great thing that we made with the piastres and the money orders. He said, I hope that's not part of the scheme that's going on here in Saigon. He said, because you could be in real trouble. So we got back to base camp, and we knew we were in trouble when we saw the CID was waiting for us. That's the U.S. Army's version of the FBI. Now, how do we take this bad money and make good money out of it? Well, we had some pretty good ideas. Take a look at it when you read the chapter, Easy Money, Maybe Not.
