In 1986, Kiely team members successfully performed the first underwater horizontal directional drill in the state of New Jersey with the assistance of Martin Cherrington, who pioneered HDD technology in the early 1960s. He developed this method as a practical, trenchless alternative for installing underground utilities and pipelines, particularly for crossing beneath large natural obstacles like rivers.
