Northshore Schools hired us to create a series of documentaries that would give parents an insight into the challenges and triumphs of teaching music during COVID-19. In normal times we would have gone to each school and filmed interviews and broll. These were not normal times. We weren’t allowed to go into the schools because of restrictions. So, instead we tutored the teachers on filming techniques. They used their phones to film the students practicing, playing and talking about their experiences. The footage came in over a series of weeks. This allowed us to give feedback on what was shot and request visuals that we still needed. We then wrapped up each production by remotely interviewing the teachers themselves. This allowed us to give context and insight into the process of teaching children during the pandemic.
One of the best things about making documentaries is the joy of discovering the story from the footage. Its not a cookie cutter process. Each individual film was in its own way a unique experience. You had to get to know the personalities and quirks of each class. Some were very out going and it was easy to find moments to use. For some others you had to dig deep into the footage to find those special clips. Combing through that much footage is a time consuming process, but the results of it are unlike any other.
Each video needed to address several aspects of the current status quo.

  1. The method each class was using to teach during the pandemic
  2. The safety preparations being used to ensure the children’s safety
  3. How the kid’s were handling this new type of schooling
  4. How the power of music helped the kids during a tough time

We used this set of guides to start categorizing and organizing footage. This way we had buckets of sound bits to draw from when putting together sections. This assured we didn’t miss moments we wanted include.
