Every five minutes, an American life is lost to overdose. Addiction is the public health crisis of our time. Behind every number is a son, a daughter, a parent, a friend. Families are left grieving, and communities are left searching for answers. Shatterproof was founded by Gary Mendel after the devastating loss of his son, Brian. Out of that tragedy came a clear purpose, to reduce the devastating burden of substance use disorder on families, communities, and our nation. Today, as a national nonprofit, we carry forward that purpose with urgency, hope, and compassion, driving change across three pillars. Transforming addiction treatment through tools like Shatterproof’s Treatment Atlas, the first platform that helps individuals find quality, evidence-based care. We are changing how treatment is delivered, measured, and accessed. Families deserve care that works, rooted in science and accountability. Reducing stigma with compassion. Stigma isolates, compassion connects. Shatterproof works to replace shame with understanding, through public campaigns, community engagement, and amplifying the voices of those with lived experience. We are building allies to help people begin their path to wellness, and show that people can thrive in recovery. Educating and empowering communities. We partner with schools, families, medical professionals, workplaces, and policy makers to prevent substance use, expand access to life-saving resources, and change public policy to strengthen care and close dangerous loopholes. Together, we are building communities where support and knowledge save lives. Everything we do is grounded in science, informed by lived experience, and measured for impact, because lives depend on results. We cannot do this alone.
